Hatred can come from inequality, from historic misunderstandings, from grief passed on from generation to generation as a badge of honour. But viewed over a long period in various guises, violence is fostered mainly by crass ignorance, superstition and intolerance. 

More than ever, our world needs to develop education, scientific inquiry, liberty of thought, awareness. The Internet, which owes so much to you, to Bob Hahn and other pioneers, can be a powerful tool to carry out this agenda of liberation from obscurantist beliefs and fears. More than ever, the Internet needs to be centered on the global user, her/his rights, aspirations and needs.

My heart is heavy. Our friends in France have endured the most heinous acts by brutal terrorists who are bent solely on the disruption of society. We must not let them destroy what we have worked so hard to create.
