The status or well known trademark is a category that depends of the use of the brand in each country and I did not recommend at this stage in debating this point because, in general, is applicable for trademarks that are consumers oriented (like Coca Cola, Google, etc)

ISOC could actually register its trademark in some 97 countries at once, under the Madrid Protocol, see:

If ISOC’s IP lawyers have not yet considered this possibility, then maybe it would be worth looking at.

My personal opinion is that we should register when chapters emerge and the chapter should own it. Also when strategic reasons come about. Otherwise we'd have to spend $1000 per year × 193 UN nations (+ a few extra) + misc costs... and I'd rather see that go on local education, connectivity, consumer protection...
