[Washington, D.C.- April 14, 2016] The Internet Society today announced that it has appointed Mark Buell to the role of Regional Bureau Director for North America. In this role starting May 2, he will be responsible for building awareness of the Internet Society and advancing its mission of promoting an open, secure Internet for the benefit of all people.
Mark brings a wealth of policy, technology and Internet governance experience to his new role, having worked for the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) and the National Aboriginal Health Organization Ottawa (NAHO). His roles at NAHO included Policy Analyst and Director of the Communications and Research Unit, and Communications Manager and Senior Communications Advisor at CIRA.
His commitment to Internet governance includes the creation of the Canadian Internet Forum (CIF), a national discussion about Internet-related issues. The CIF has become a critical component of the national discussion on Canada's Internet future and has mobilized a domestic Internet governance community.
Raúl Echeberría, Vice President of Global Engagement for the Internet Society, explains, "Mark will help us strengthen our presence in North America by working closely with our chapters and members, and engaging with local and regional partners to advance our mission. His experience in communications, policy issues and community-building will help the Internet Society in achieving our goals in the region."
