I just mentioned in a thread on "[Chapter-delegates] questions to the candidates for the BoT" the Website as an example of technical failure and inability to manage issues: So I felt I should check if things have improved - as was promised many times they would.
First it took 7sec to load. So I investigated where the time was spent. Here are the findings:
Today the home page holds a background picture of size 2.4MB (named BA2.jpg) and needs a total 0f 3.0MB. Assuming an end to end throughput of 1Mb (there are regions on earth where you get significantly less!) it takes at least 25 seconds to load. Even on my relatively well connected network it takes 5-8 sec till "onload" event! 80% of the load time go on a background picture. This picture is then scaled down and cropped by the browser from 3264x1836=6Mpx to {window-width}x590. If we assume a window-width of 1400 the picture you see has 590x1400 = 0.82Mpx. So 6Mpx are transmitted to show 0.82Mpx. If we apply the same JPEG compression rate we end up with a size of 320kB (vs 2.4MB) for the picture size that is displayed.
Conclusion: for a website that provides max 1.0MB(max) of visible information 3MB are transmitted - 2MB wasted! 25sec (min, assuming 1Mb end to end) or 8sec (min) load time can make a difference. And it could be achieved by applying some intelligence on one background picture. Even 8sec are rather long ... so there would be more room for improvement - if there were somebody who cares.
