Hello,
Following a message in the DTN-interest list, I looked at
https://www.ngmn.org/uploads/media/NGMN_5G_White_Paper_V1_0.pdf which
presents the final deliverables of the NGMN alliance that includes as its
members some of the largest Telecom companies.
5G is visualized as offering 50-200 MBPS 2020 and beyond, anticipates
creation and use of new radio interfaces, a new design of "an end-to-end
system that includes all aspects of the network". 5G will operate as a
"multi-layered" network offering "multiple-types of user interactions".
It would be a vast improvement in capabilities over present 2,3 and 4G
networks in terms of 5G's anticipation to offer mobile broadband on high
speed trains (moving hotspots) and aircrafts (3D connectivity), its ability
to offer massive connectivity to sensors, actuators and cameras, and the
intention to maintain lifeline communication in the event of disasters.
On the commercial side, the paper talks about "value added cloud services
by operators", higher "QoE", strikes a distinction between "basic
connectivity" and "enhanced connectivity" as well as "operator offer
enriched by partner" and "partner offer enriched by operator". The
business models of "Evolved usage-based pricing", "event-based" charging,
"tiered services" would support the three classes of businesses - "asset
provider", "connectivity provider" and "partner services provider" . 5G
would also, as a design feature, call for "Operator control capabilities
for devices" and "connectivity transparency". The networks would be able
to deal with a huge amount of sensitive data that need to be "protected"
against unauthorized access, use, disruption, modification, inspection ...
while offering "bearer-independent" higher layer security extending to
servers on the Internet compliant to lawful interception obligations.
5G would have a "layered" architecture enhanced for business enablement.
The network would be offered to operators / business partners in SLICES-
the intention of a 5G slice is to provide only the traffic treatment that
is necessary for the use case, and avoid all other unnecessary
functionality.
What are the threats to the Internet Model from all these ideas?
