Hi everyone,
As there were some questions on overlap with IoT for this application I went ahead and asked the application team for some clarification.
See below their answer.
I also want to clarify that we indeed do not ave any SIG or application for a SIG on Internet of Things at this stage.
Warm regards
Joyce
All,
I got this below forwarded to me. I am responding to the list and hope
someone will approve the posting. I am not on this list as I am not
representative of any ISOC chapter, although I am a member of ISOC-SE.
My response is:
The only "question" I find is the one on overlap with IoT.
First of all, there is, as far as I know, no SIG on Internet of Things.
Secondly ISOC do not have any activity on IoT part from a paper that is
under construction (which I happen to know as I am helping with it).
What exists is a Dynamic Coalition on Internet of Things where many
individuals and organizations participate, where ISOC is one:
http://www.intgovforum.org/cms/component/content/article/118-dynamic-coalition-proposals/1217-dynamic-coalition-on-the-internet-of-things
They just had a meeting directly after IETF in Prague.
Sure, there might be overlap, just like there is overlap between what is
done in many chapters, or many different groups of different kinds. IoF
is to that degree more focused, but also do not have the baggage of IoT.
To handle the overlap, I expect many people active in IoF is also active
in IoT, like myself.
And, regarding activities related to IoF that is already happening, that
is EXACTLY why we have tried to get a chapter, and now SIG at ISOC for I
think 6 months or even more. Just because there are so many activities,
ISOC, if anyone, must do proper coordination, that have not happened
with IoT. We see some coordination in IoT now, but it is late, very very
very late. We can not allow ourselves to miss the train regarding food.
Food is so important.
The first major event will be a conference in coordination with the
World Exhibition in Milan end of September. If the SIG issues are
finally resolved in time. I think it would be a good thing for ISOC to
be visible there.
If you have more questions, do not hesitate reaching out to us directly.
Best, Patrik Fältström

It's right that "The FOOD SIG overlaps with the INTERNET OF THINGS SIG".
There is also a similar project in Cameroon like the one in India.

The FOOD SIG overlaps with the INTERNET OF THINGS SIG in the application of Precision Agriculture. When you add the use of Drones for specific pest eradication etc you can see how the two can compliment each other
As to Joly's comment about Code for All conference. The Jamaican group spoke about an open source app called Harvest API, it's an open source project but no details are on the site. In the Jamaican example the funding is coming from the Canadian government IDRC and the idea is to provide Open Data to the farmers and their markets to encourage the free flow of information so that the farmers don't bring too many products to market. This has been done in many Mobile Applications in Africa. One of the more interesting projects I saw is the Potato Institute of India which shares information about the Potato Blight. This is the same blight that caused the Irish Potato famine in 1849 ( My relatives left Ireland as a result of the famine) This group shares information about the pin point locations of the blight and broadcasts to all the adjacent farmers to curtain it's spread.

This is one of the biggest challenge we are facing in underdevelopped countries. Fight against poverty alleviation by enhancing Agriculture and making good use of Internet to help improve and get more revenue.
And what Vint is addressing is how to protect agriculture against plant diseases by anticipation. Add Satellite technologies that are used to do water drain calculation and harvest anticipation.

The Internet of Food SIG might also address the problem of plant diseases by exploring databases of healthy and diseased plant images that could be used to help farmers diagnose crop problems (take photo with mobile, search for match in the database, connect with experts to redress the problem)...

Dear Chapter Leaders,
As an immediate follow up to my previous message about re-instating the SIGs, please find attached the application of the Internet of Food Special Interest Group.
Your initial feedback was very positive on the concept and the issue related to Internet of Food, but you all felt that this would be better organised in a Special interest Group.
To close the process the group has re-applied as a Special Interest Group and I wanted you to see the full SIG application as well. Please provide any additional feedback latest by 18th of August.
Thanks a lot
Joyce
