>> Good morning:
I agree fully with Veni, Olivier and Grigori in this matter.
Since this is an ITU Development conference, I would also like to be reassured that the Regional Directors most concerned will be part of the ISOC delegation to WTDC.
Regards
Christopher

They have compiled a short message to update you on two key initiatives begun last year and carried through 2014 for potentially significant impact. Please take a few moments to review this short update and feel free to provide any feedback you think appropriate.

>>> Hello Everyone!
>>>
>>> 2014 is shaping up to be a critical year and we wanted to share two near-term targets where we could use your help and expertise —(1) IXP Toolkit & Best Practices Report & Portal (community feed-back) and (2) the Upcoming ITU World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC):
>>>
>>> 1. Throughout 2013 we updated you on the IXP Toolkit & Best Practices Project. To refresh memories – this is a grant project that aims to promote and enhance IXP development, the project tries to:
>>> - consolidate and document best practices for creating and improving IXPs
>>> - encourage data collection
>>> - create case studies
>>> - and facilitate work with IXP communities of interest and other partners
>>>
>>> (a) Report & Portal: We are aiming for release of the report by the end of February and for the Portal to go "live" in tandem or just after the Report release. Both the report and Portal are considered preliminary and are going to be used to obtain Internet community feed-back. We would really like to hear back from chapters throughout the year on the report & portal. You can email Jane Coffin, Director, Development Strategy, (coffin at ISOC.org).
>>>
>>> (b) Training, Equipment & Case-studies: The IXP Toolkit project also facilitates capacity building and has funds for training, workshops, equipment, and travel for developing/emerging markets. Here are examples of how we can work together:
>>> -Are you assisting an IXP develop? Let us know if you are interested in a workshop, training, "twinning" or mentoring from an existing IXP? We may be able to help.
>>> -Do you need equipment to get started or to upgrade existing facilities? Let us know, we may have funds to help.
>>> -Did you help start an IXP? Let us know and we could work with you on a case-study that will go on the IXP Portal.
>>> -Are you interested in helping us provide training in your region? Let us know as we would be very keen to have chapter delegates help us with training.
>>>
>>> (2) WTDC: As many of you already know, 2014 will be a very busy year for Internet policy-related conferences. A first big one coming up is the WTDC (ITU-D’s World Telecommunication Development Conference). Sally Wentworth ISOC Senior Director, Strategic Public Policy is leading ISOC's preparation for this event that will be held on 31 March - 11 April, in the UAE.
>>>
>>> ISOC Staff is shaping an ISOC contribution to the WTDC now. Our contribution will have two audiences: first, we will be speaking to the policy community and offering a perspective on the topics where we have expertise; second, we will be speaking to the ITU in terms of its future development activities and workplan.
>>>
>>> We would welcome Chapter members' input (keeping in mind the above audiences) on things we might emphasize in the following areas BY 31 JANUARY:
>>>
>>> - Digital Divide / enabling environment
>>> - Local hosting infrastructure
>>> - Regional & Cross-border connectivity
>>> - Human Capacity Building
>>> - Security / spam
>>>
>>> We have an ISOC website for WTDC here: http://www.internetsociety.org/development/world-telecommunication-development-conference-wtdc. Our background paper for the conference is here: http://www.internetsociety.org/doc/wtdc-2014-itu-world-telecommunication-development-conference-background-information
>>>
>>> Thank you!
>>> Jane and Sally
