Experts to Discuss U.S. Government Internet Surveillance Programs and Online Privacy at INET San Francisco

[San Francisco] - At INET San Francisco, the Internet Society and its San Francisco Chapter, in conjunction with CNET, will host a live discussion on cyber surveillance, an issue of great importance in the wake of recent revelations about the U.S. Government's controversial surveillance programs. The event on October 2, 2013 will present two experts on individual privacy rights and cyber surveillance, and encourage discussion regarding public policy issues that could change the Internet as it is known today.

The INET San Francisco agenda will kick off with a discussion featuring two experts on public policy and cyber surveillance. Alexander Abdo, a staff attorney with the National Security Program for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), will join Nate Cardozo, Staff Attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation's digital civil liberties team. Together, they represent many years of experience defending individual rights against this kind of government intrusion.

"Government surveillance and online privacy have been making news headlines recently, and become a topic of great debate," said Paul Brigner, Internet Society Regional Bureau Director, North America. "At the Internet Society, we believe that ongoing dialogue on the topic is necessary to educate and inform audiences. It is in this spirit that we invite people to join us for a multistakeholder discussion regarding what is at stake when it comes to Internet privacy and security."

The event will also feature a panel discussion with the following participants:

* Susan Freiwald, Professor, University of San Francisco School of Law

* Matthew Sundquist, Former Facebook Privacy Team Member and Co-founder of Plot.ly

* Declan McCullagh (moderator), Chief Political Correspondent, CNET

* Paul Brigner, North America Regional Bureau Director, Internet Society
