[Chapter-delegates] One small way for chapters to come together for ISOC's work

Folks
The requirement for chapters to hold occasional events "to advance the
mission" seems onerous to some, so I thought I'd make a small gesture to
help.
I just moderated a webinar for Columbia University that I think went
well. Alejandro Pisanty and Bob Hinden of ISOC joined in and Joly McFie
helped distribute it. (Thanks)
[image: CITI]On Tuesday November 12 2013 at 12:00pm EST the Columbia
Institute for Tele-Information <https://www4.gsb.columbia.edu/citi> (CITI)
hosted an e-conference on Internet Governance titled:“*Is There A Third Way
For The Internet: Neither The US Nor The UN But
Independence?*”<https://citicolumbia.webex.com/citicolumbia/j.php?ED=266817567&UID=504362092&RT=MiMxMQ%3D%3D>
We used Webex, a slightly awkward but reasonably functional tool. I
checked with Ted Mooney and learned that *ISOC has a Webex license that can
be used to host chapter events.* It's not too hard to make work but there
are a few tricks.
So I'm volunteering to host/moderate/operate webex for two or three
chapter events and pass on the experience. It's not a big deal to help for
a couple of hours from my desk.
This seems a simple way to do outreach and meet the chapter
requirements. It's a lot easier to ask experts to spend a little time from
their desk on webex than to fly to New York or Gambia. It also makes it
practical for chapters to work together.
It would be up to the chapters to choose topics and invite guests. One
I'd like to suggest is "Effective involvement in Internet governance: How
you can be involved and promote Internet freedom." My experience has been
if I jump in with good expertise I can make a difference. ISOC has several
folks like Sally Wentworth who are experts in working the system and I
might have a few things I've learned to share.
I happen to have a personal interest in using spectrum policy make
practical wireless service with 100 gigabyte caps at a consumer price. I
know the technology in LTE Advanced will make consumer-priced high capacity
wireless possible but it will take major rethinking on how spectrum is
shared. So I'd love to work on advanced spectrum policy.

I think ISOC will be far more effective if we develop a core of
"citizen soldiers" rather than rely solely on paid staff. Webinars are easy
so I can do a couple as a volunteer.
I'd be particularly encouraged if a few chapters got together on
something like this. Email me off list if interested.
