Dear all,

May 3rd will mark global celebrations for World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), hosted by UNESCO. This landmark event dates back to 1991 and the UNESCO General Conference held in Namibia, which endorsed principles of press freedom known as the Windhoek Declaration.

This year's theme, "Securing freedom of expression in all media", will focus on journalists and individuals' ability to safely communicate and exchange information, whether online or offline.

Two initiatives will mark the Internet Society's contribution to this Day later this week:

I. UNESCO event in Costa Rica (2-4 May, San Jose)
-------------------
The Internet Society was invited by UNESCO to organize a session at the main WPFD event, to be held in Costa Rica. This session, organized in partnership with our Costa Rica Chapter, will be held on May 3rd at 16:00 local time (22:00 UTC). It will focus on the role of Internet intermediaries in protecting freedom of expression, particularly in the context of Latin America.

UNESCO announced that the sessions should be webcast. No information is available yet, but we invite you to check again UNESCO's WPFD website closer to the event.

II. Internet Society social media outreach
-------------------
Please find at the following link a new ISOC webpage dedicated to WPFD, including information and some key messages: http://www.internetsociety.org/worldpressfreedom

We hope to feature one or two guest blogs reflecting on some of the key challenges and opportunities related to online journalism and an open Internet.

Our core messaging on social media will be:
On #PressFreedom day join our call for an open, accessible Internet as a way to guarantee our right to a free and pluralistic media #WPFD

We would greatly appreciate your support to spread the word and make your voice count on that day. We would like to invite all Chapters to follow and join the conversation on our main social media channels, such as:

	• twitter.com/internetsociety
	• facebook.com/InternetSociety

In addition, we invite you to share on this list any local initiatives or discussions you may be organizing on that day. You can also add your event on this map featured on UNESCO's website: https://worldpressfreedomday2013.crowdmap.com/

Thanks and best regards,
Nicolas Seidler
