I am noticing today<http://guevents.georgetown.edu/event/vint_cerf_internet_in_the_21st_century>that
Vint appears to have a new post-WCIT hobby horse - solving the problem
of "bit rot". Bit rot is the loss over time of the ability to properly
interpret digital information, and also the degradation of the media that
carries it.. Vint's notion is "Digital Vellum", in his words "creating an
ecosystem for preserving the meaning of digital information over long
periods of time."
I think digital preservation particularly of online media, and the
development of open standards for the same, is a suitable topic for ISOC to
pay attention to. I know the W3C is interested, too.
There are already plenty of initiatives within the library and museum
communities.
If enough people are interested perhaps we could form a group.
