Victor,

thanks for pointing to the Safer Internet Day and the work on the subject you are promoting in Cameroon. Let me add two comments:

1. From long-standing experience we know it is valuable to be careful with children online safety campaigns and some of their backers, as they may be started out of fear and to attract control-driven mentalities. Thus they are a good opportunity for you and ISOC Cameroon to promote an Internet-oriented mentality in which openness is highly valued.

2. From a woman named Parry Aftab, a great leader and one of the pioneers of children online safety, who is also a dear friend and was very active in ISOC, I learned taht the greatest risk for children is not the evils that can happen online but being left off the Internet. The other (admittedly sometimes awful) evils have to be managed accordingly to this priority. Children have to learn (with assistance) to live online as much as they learn to live in an unsafe world offline.

I add to the above that it is useful to calibrate online risk management with offline risk management. In many of the places where today's children live the physical world is far more dangerous and scary than anything you can find online!!

I hope you find this useful, and commesurate with what you are doing.

Yours,

Alejandro Pisanty

Asunto: [Chapter-delegates] Safer Internet Day 2013: Message from Neelie Kroes

Dear Colleagues,

Today 5th February 2013, The Internet Community is celebrating the "Safer Internet Day" initiated by the European Union Programme called "Safer Internet". The theme for 2013 is "Online Rights and Responsibilities"; It encourages Internet users to"connect with respect".

I found this post and message of Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the EU Commission about SID2013 very interesting and wanted to share it with you. You can read more: http://blogs.ec.europa.eu/neelie-kroes/safer-internet-kids-201/

"The Internet — open, free, innovative — offers so many benefits for children and adults. But you’re not truly free online unless you’re safe. And with simple tools we can ensure the best benefits for everyone."

I'm deeply following this because my project as an ISOC Next Generation Leaders Laureate 2012 aims to promote safe and responsible use of the Internet by Children and young people in Cameroon. I will be implementing it during the next 8 months. Thanks to the Internet Society of the Support.
