Even though we are so far away, our cosmopolitan nation has learnt
important lessons from South Africa. Nelson Mandela's many years of
struggle and hardship in apartheid resistance, as well as the effort he
made as a leader in healing and uniting all South Africans touched us. In
visiting Trinidad and Tobago in 2004, Madiba spoke in Port of Spain on
equality of the sexes and his efforts in championing women to be part of
his cabinet.
In memory and thanksgiving of Madiba's life and with solidarity to our
South African friends, we in Trinidad and Tobago will be celebrating
Mandela Day (as an official public holiday) for the first time in the
coming year. We will always remember Madiba's visit and request, “I came
for two reasons because I love you very much and because it is not easy to
love an old man. So I urge you to love South Africa and this old man.”
Kind regards
