All,
a few weeks ago I posted requesting information on the topic of data
retention in other jurisdictions, interception etc.

Last week there were a series of public hearings with the Australian
Parliament's Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security at which we
heard submissions from a range of law enforcement agencies, telcos and
ISPs, civil liberties groups and interested parties. I was amongst those
giving evidence.

It all revolves around a discussion paper which proposes wide ranging
reforms of the current system of interception, search warrants and data
retention.

Since the opening of the enquiry, it has come down to a clearer request
(though not terribly clear at all) for a system of data retention that
emulates the European Union system. This is where much of the focus is,
however there are many other items that concern us within the paper.

I am therefore asking for any information other chapters can offer on the
EU data retention schema and for model sytstems (diagrams would be great!)
of implementation that I might examine.

About the enquiry:

About the Committee:

The various submissions and a record of the testimonies given are to be
found from there, too. [I appeared on the 27th, though the other
submissions are worth a look at!]

best regards

Narelle
