Dear all,
Based on leaks and news reports we have reason to believe that the Trans-Pacific Trade (TPP) Agreement which is currently under negotiation can potentially have an adverse impact on the Internet. In many ways it seems to be not unlike ACTA. However, this is an assumption based on leaked texts and individual comments by some of the negotiators. Our official position is that we don't comment on leaked texts, but we we have concisely called for more transparency, openness and inclusiveness in all Internet governance issues.
The TPP is about to enter in its 15th round of negotiations in Auckland, New Zealand in the beginning of December. To this effect, we have prepared a statement on the lack of transparency of the TPP.
We also had some informal discussions with a number of civil society organizations as well as business entities, which share the same concerns. They expressed their interest in joining forces with us and co-sign the statement. Should they decide to do so we would obviously add an introductory para explaining who supports the statement.
We are planning to issue the statement at the start of the negotiations on 3 December and to reach out to the various interested organizations in the course of next week. This is in line with what Konstantinos has shared with the Chapter Delegates of Asia-Pacific and Latin America. Please let us know should you have any comments.
Best regards
Markus
