Folks
recently our Communications minister in the AU govt made a speech covering
a range of things, but all is giving us cause for greater comfort in its
support for ICANN and IETF in the lead up to WCIT.
See: 27.06 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xh1OiTOi0lw
[Note this is an ISOC video :-) ]
After despatching the ETNO proposal Sen Conroy said;
"The Internet has developed extraordinarily over the last twenty years,
our existing regulatory arrangements, ITU etc have served us well. There
would have to be a very strong case made, and I dont believe that case
has been made, to make a substantive change to the way that we regulate at
the moment."
And that was in a room with the ETNO guy, Sec. Gen. Toure from the ITU and
Strickling from the USA.
So, I think we are in a strong position there.
That was echoed in the other preparatory meetings we've held and
participated in in Australia, such as our recent auIGF.
There are also other statements such as more openness on international
roaming and not extending to broader definitions of 'operating agency'
that I am glad they are supporting.
Let's hope WCIT in the coming weeks carries that position through.
PS - They've also recently abandoned the Internet Filter proposal, so
we're all fairly pleased with this progress! [that still leaves data
retention and a few others, but progress is progress!!]
Regards
Narelle
