Dear all,
This is to inform you that Constance Bommelaer and Christine Runnegar
participated in the WIPO Diplomatic Conference on the Protection of
Audiovisual Performances (Beijing, 20-26 June) where high-level
representatives of WIPO Member States gathered to finalize and sign the
Beijing Audiovisual Performances Treaty. The treaty's objective is to
provide intellectual property rights for performers in their audiovisual
performances (such as actors in film and TV) that are relevant for the
current and evolving digital environment.
In its opening statement, the Internet Society called on WIPO Member States
to preserve an Open Internet while protecting artists' rights and their
Intellectual Property, and specifically to implement the principles
incorporated in the ISOC statement of principles, and to protect and
preserve the Internet.
The Internet Society called for fair and equitable IPR frameworks that
respect the broader public interest. The Internet Society encouraged the
preservation of human capacities enabled by the Internet through a number of
the ISOC principles such as the ability to Connect, to Communicate, to
Innovate without permission and the ability to Share. Coherent policies at
national and international levels are needed to minimize uncertainty for
Internet intermediaries and other stakeholders, and to foster Internet
access and use, online innovation, investment, competition, and the free
flow of information across borders.
