Jacek,
thanks a lot for laying out all the efforts and due diligence exerted by ISOC HQ for the formation of the chapter in Estonia. Great to read again the name of Anne Villems!! Congratulations and kudos for the hard work.
Many will find it useful and entertaining to read a book called The Internet of Elsewhere, by Cyrus Farivar, one of whose four country-oriented chapters is dedicated to the rise of the Internet in Estonia. Cyrus has a website for this too, http://internetofelsewhere.com and continues active in Internet news and policy. Maybe now we'll read some clarifications to his work!
Your note reminds us further of how hard we have to work in order to stay inclusive. Thanks for that too.
Yours,
Alejandro Pisanty

Dear Alejandro,
I have been at least 10 times in Estonia, first time in 1996, and am quite familiar with their Internet community.
I personally know many of the people who signed the application and can assure you that the list contains a good mixture of 'young activists' (like Elver Loho and Siim Tuisk who showed themselves so effective in recent anti-ACTA activities and organization of INET) and 'pioneers' (with whom I worked in 1990s, e.g. Anne Villems - alumni of early ISOC workshops organized by George Sadovsky [you must have met her...], she was later several times trainer in CEENet ISOC-like workshops; Jaak Lippmaa - who got .ee domain administration from J. Postel; Mart Laanpere - who was long time trainer in many CEU countries and developed commonly used there Open Source LMS; to mention just few with whom I had a honor to work with).
Please also note that Estonia is a relatively small country (1.5 million inhabitants) so having 59 founding members is not a bad result.
With best regards,
Jacek Gajewski

We get into some trouble when some key people for the evolution of the Internet in a country are not properly involved and even become hostile to the chapter.

> Internet is a broad and important field with a lot of users, but Estonia lacks of well-organized group of interested people and organizations who would work and stand together for the future of the Internet in Estonia and as well on the Global level. The goal is to activate cooperation and discussion both within Estonia and internationally amongst Internet users. Therefore we would like to establish in cooperation with Estonian members of the ISOC, an Estonian Chapter of the Internet Society.
> ISOC is a very strong Global organization and a network with more than 100 organizational and more than 44,000 individual members in over 80 Chapters around the world. Having an Estonian Chapter would allow us to cooperate with other Chapters, organizations, individuals to share experiences, know-how and best practices. As well, Estonia has a lot of experience in areas interesting for all, for example a widely spoken subject at present like cyber-attacks. Estonia is a very small country that wants and needs the opportunity to share our world with the rest of the world.

Mr Marek-Andres Kauts and Mr Jaak Lippmaa have one of the biggest experience in the Internet Community in Estonia. Both of them were behind the Estonian domain reform that took place almost 2 years ago. Mr Jaak Lippmaa has been involved in the Internet and domain field in Estonia from 1992. Mr Marek-Andres Kauts is in addition the Estonian government's representative in ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) from 2008.

> Estonian Internet Foundation (EIF) has appointed the Internet Community Advisory Board (ICAB) consisting of interested experts from the Estonian Internet community. Aim of the Advisory Board is to be an intermediary between the interests and needs of the Estonian Internet Community and Estonian Internet Foundation. ICAB has a consultative role to EIF. Therefore we plan to involve members of the ICAB with The Estonian Internet Society Chapter.
