Hi all,
I understand the concern about Facebook. However as Ed points out, the best strategy seems to be to use it all the while educating our followers.
We've been using Facebook mainly to promote content on isoc.org (such as the latest news items and events). However we've also been using it to engage in discussions with our followers on a variety of topics (that reflect our values) with great success. In fact, IPv6 Day was our most successful day on Facebook (where we acquired close to 2,000 new followers in a 24 hour period). Facebook is also an important source of traffic to isoc.org.
Having said this, Facebook is only one of the social sites we use to get the message out. I'm always on the lookout for complimentary/alternative channels (such as Google + and Diaspora).
Again, I agree that education of our followers is key.
I'll be setting up regular webinars in the New Year to discuss and exchange ideas about the use of social media in general (similar to the sessions I organised this past July). I think this would make for a great discussion topic. I'll send a note out in December about upcoming webinars.
Regards,
Dan

In addition, 33% of users are aged between 18 and 24 which sums up a total of 1,193,050 users. The largest increase in the number of users in the last three months has occurred in the interval 25-34 years , reaching a rate of 31% of all users (source http://www.strategy.socialnetworks.ro/2011/ and http://www.manafu.ro/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/infoGrafic_web.jpg ) .
