=====================================
Dear Colleagues,

Apologies for the short notice.

[Europe and the review of Directive 95/46/EC]

(1) The Internet Society has been invited to participate in a "by
invitation" only workshop on privacy in Copenhagen on 23 March 2011.
As yet, we only have preliminary details concerning the workshop,
however, we anticipate the workshop will address the following
questions:

- Is there a need to supplement the classic privacy principles from
the OECD, CoE and EU with new principles?
- Is data protection enough or should the legislative framework be
more inclusive and address privacy in a broader sense?
- How do we empower citizens to be aware about privacy issues and deal
with privacy issues in their everyday life?
- How do we strengthen the national Data Protection Authorities to
give them better possibilities to ensure a cross-national coherent
interpretation of the legislation?
- How can legislation be used to encourage the use of “privacy by
design”, “privacy enhancing technologies” and “privacy impact
assessment”?
- How do we create incentives among companies and in public
administration to minimize the collection of personal data?

Further, it is our present understanding that the output of the
workshop may be submitted to the European Commission for consideration
in its review of the Directive.

We welcome your input regarding those questions for possible speaking
points. Please send me your comments by Friday 18 March 2011, or
earlier if possible.

[Europe and the review of Directive 2004/48/EC]

(2) The Internet Society is proposing to respond to the European
Commission Consultation on the Commission Report on the enforcement of
intellectual property rights (http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/consultations/2011/intellectual_property_rights_en.htm
) which closes on 31 March 2011.

To help us build our response, we welcome your comments regarding the
report by 21 March 2011, or earlier if possible.

Thank you very much,

Christine
