Dear all,
since it may be of use to others, we would like to share our
press brief around World IPv6 Day:
*** INTRODUCTION
When the Internet protocol was first designed as an experiment between
researchers and academics in the 1970s, the developers could not have
predicted the growth of the Internet. Back then, the pool of around 4
billion IPv4 addresses seemed huge. The Internet has today become a
global phenomenon of unprecedented scale and this initial pool of IPv4
address space is now almost exhausted. For the last ten years, finding
ways to upgrade to the new version of the Internet protocol - IPv6,
designed to expand the amount of IP addresses to over 340 trillion,
trillion, trillion IP addresses – has occupied the minds of engineers,
governments and policy makers all over the world.
On 8 June 2011, one of the largest experiments ever conducted on the
infrastructure of the Internet will take place. World IPv6 Day is
considered to be the first global test of the so-called ‘dual-stack’
Internet. Top web destinations, such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and
Facebook, as well as major content delivery networks, including Akamai
and Limelight, will move the Internet into the near future by turning
on IPv6 for their main services for 24 hours. Vendors, such as
Microsoft, have written special patches for their software to work
around possible failures in their legacy software. But will this work?
How the Internet, with its heterogeneous and organic setup, will behave
during the experiment is not yet clear. Whatever happens on World IPv6
Day will be key to the future development of the Internet.
*** WORLD IPV6 DAY
All around the world people will be watching developments on World IPv6
Day. In the Netherlands, a major Internet hub, home to many leading
Internet organisations and the largest Internet eXchange Point (IXP) in
the world, hundreds of developers, operators and stakeholders have
gathered to watch the events unfold in a 24 hour marathon. To celebrate
this unique moment in history, journalists, media and industry bloggers
are invited to join the event, filled with interesting talks, visions
and experiments on and around IPv6. The event offers live insight into
the impact that IPv6 deployment will have on the Internet, how growth,
demand and quality will develop and mature in the future, and what
these challenges and changes will bring to businesses, service
providers, network operators and users. Particular focus will be given
to the potential impact that not deploying IPv6 will have on the
Internet as we know it.

P.S. note that World IPv6 Day in the Netherlands is fully booked with
over 300 participants. It is held in conjunction with the MORE IP event
(http://more-ip-event.net), a two-day conference to discuss future
developments and demands within the Internet industry and IP
interconnection. MORE IP is about the growth of the Internet in the
area of applications, mobile Internet, social media, video and gaming.
Many professionals from the Internet sector will be present at this
event. At MORE IP, the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) will be
launching its new 100GE ports, Inter-IPX service and SLAs. Needless to
say people are invited to join that event as well.
