Joly,

a low number of registrations may only prove that few people submit to the 
extortion model and that the model fails somewhat, not that it is not the 
model.

While Eric's statement may damagingly extend to some good-faith proponents 
of new gTLDs, one can't deny that defensive registrations are at least 
something all TLDs may earn money with.
