Hello
Long time no newsletter, eh? It's not because there's been nothing
happening - on the contrary one has been too busy to write! Major
events like the State of the Net conference down in DC, and Social
Media Week here in NYC have consumed much bandwidth. But here we are
again, most specifically to remind everyone of the ISOC-NY sponsored
Students for Free Culture Conference at NYU this weekend, but also to
share some video of recent events.
==Students For Free Culture 2011 Conference - Feb 18/19 2011==
The Students For Free Culture 2011 Conference (SFC NYC) will be held
February 19th-20th 2011 at NYU. Susan Crawford and the diaspora
developers will be keynote speakers. Registration and webcast info at
http://www.isoc-ny.org/p2/?p=1680
Before we get into the vids though a few happenings today: a webcast
you won't want to miss, as the Senate Judiciary Committee looks at the
ongoing US War on Websites, the ISOC-NY tv show, and an interesting
privacy seminar at Fordham U.
==Webcast: U.S. Senate Hearing on seizing websites – today 2/16 10am==
In contrast to yesterday’s Hillary Clinton speech about Internet
Freedom, today, Feb. 16 2011, the Senate Committee on the Judiciary
has scheduled a hearing entitled “Targeting Websites Dedicated To
Stealing American Intellectual Property” at 10:00 a.m. This is a
followup to last year’s shelving of the COICA Act and the recent
DHS-ICE site seizures – which some consider to be of dubious legality.
Witnesses include representatives of the Authors Guild, Go Daddy,
Verizon, and Visa. There will be a webcast.

==ISOC-NY TV - Aram Sinnreich - Music in the Network Age==
Also today Wed Feb 16 sees another edition of the ISOC-NY TV Program -
this week featuring Aram Sinreich's recent talk at NYU. MNN Ch2 : TW56
: RCN 34 : VRZN 34 2pm.
==Helen Nissenbaum: Privacy in Context – Fordham Law==
At 4.30pm this afternoon, Feb 16 2011, Fordham Law School’s Center on
Law and Information Policy will host NYU Professor Helen Nissenbaum
talking about her new book “Privacy in Context: Technology, Policy and
the Integrity of Social Life.” Public welcome.

Alright! Now to the vids.
==Video: Hillary Clinton – Internet Rights and Wrongs==
The US State Dept’s Co.Nx network presented Hillary Clinton addressing
'Internet Rights and Wrongs: Choices and Challenges In A Networked
World' at George Washington University on Feb 15 2011. This was a
follow up to her Internet Freedom speech of January 2010. Video/chat
was made available live via Adobe Connect and facebook.
A transcript and video(s) can be found at

==Video: “Open Government and The Transformation of New York City’s
Digital Environment”==
Social Media Week took place last week in nine cities worldwide.
Comprehensive live and archived webcasts are available of practically
all events. ISOC-NY attended and filmed one of the NYC sessions that
comprised a progress report on the City government's digital strategy.
For many of us it was our first chance to see new NYC Chief Digital
Officer Rachel Sterne in action. See for yourself on

== Video: Blair Levin and Craig Settles on the National Broadband Plan==
I'm not going to list the various State of the Net sessions noted, but
suffice it to say they can be found on our noticeboard. Another that I
will mention as especially good viewing is a recent New America
Foundation event that grew out of a GigaOm to-and-fro between
community broadband advocate Craig Settles and National Broadband Plan
architect Blair Levin. No holds barred stuff! Recommended!

==Video: Vint Cerf & Geoff Huston at linux.conf.au==
As we know, recently the last IPv4 blocks were recently allocated. The
procrastination of IPv6 transition cannot survive much longer. At the
recent Linux.Conf in Brisbane Australia, Vint Cerf and Geoff Huston
both addressed the topic - with Vint putting it into perspective, and
Geoff examining the various ways forward.

==Internet Society statement/faq on Egypt==
and lastly, although the situation is now resolved, the Egyptian
Governments temporary suspension of Internet contact with the outside
world raises many concerns, some of which were addressed in a timely
statemt and FAQ issued by the Internet Society's global staff - read
