Greetings to all Chapter delegates. Below is a recap of recent events at
ISOC and some information regarding upcoming events. Stay in touch.

July 2011

   SPOTLIGHTS

Spotlights are high-visibility efforts from across the organization from
the

   recent past or coming soon.

   + EU Media Tour

Markus Kummer and Fridiric Donck were joined by Wende Cover during an EU

media tour 5-6 July in Brussels, Belgium. The goals of the tour were to

advance the Internet Society as a thought leader on key Internet issues,
and

formally introduce Markus in his role as VP for Public Policy. Markus and

Fridiric met a series of EU-based and focused journalists from
publications

such as the Financial Times, Bloomberg, and the Wall Street Journal. The

main interests of the journalists were related to privacy and IPR issues.

   + IETF 81

The IETF in Quibec City was a focal point for Internet Society activity
and

energy. As usual, Internet Society staff tracked and participated in a

number of the technical meetings--see the Rough Guide

http://isoc.org/wp/newsletter/?p=4068) for further detail.

Leslie Daigle participated in a plenary panel on World IPv6 Day

and the Internet Research Task Force, and were presented at the meeting.

   the IETF ( <http://www.isoc.org/leaders> http://www.isoc.org/leaders)
participated in the event.

+ TID IEEE Internet Computing Article

At Barry Leiba's request Lucy has submitted a short piece on Identity

Management technologies for the standards column in the September/
October

2011 issue. The piece looks at the history of IdM, including the

SAML/InfoCard/OpenID models and calls attention to the fractured nature
of

development and the need for convergence as social web providers_ move
into

   the IdP space (Google/Facebook/Yahoo/Twitter/etc.).

   + DNS Blocking Meetings

In conjunction with the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), the

Internet Society organized (with Andrei Robachevsky providing
introductions

   for) a press briefing by the authors (Steve Crocker, Shinkuro, Inc.;
David

   Dagon, Georgia Tech; Dan Kaminsky, DKH; Danny McPherson, Verisign, Inc.;

Paul Vixie, Internet Systems Consortium) of a whitepaper

   (
<http://domainincite.com/docs/PROTECT-IP-Technical-Whitepaper-Final.pdf>
http://domainincite.com/docs/PROTECT-IP-Technical-Whitepaper-Final.pdf)

on the technical concerns raised by the "PROTECT IP Bill_ currently
making

its way through the U.S. Congress. About 8 members of the media attended
the

briefing hosted by Internet2 and EDUCAUSE in their Washington, D.C.

   offices.

The Trust and Identity team in collaboration with the North American
Bureau

(Sally Wentworth) responded to the Notice of Inquiry (NOI) on "Models for
a

Governance Structure for the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in

   Cyberspace" ( <http://www.nist.gov/nstic/nstic-frn-noi.pdf>
http://www.nist.gov/nstic/nstic-frn-noi.pdf)

based on the US Government's National Strategy for Trusted Identities in

Cyberspace (NSTIC). The primary issues identified included national
versus

international focus, scope and remit of the proposed Steering Group, the

appropriate role for such an organization in standards development, and

clarification on the definition of an open standards organization.

   SNAPSHOTS

Snapshots are brief updates on some the significant efforts underway
across

   the organization.

   + 20th Anniversary Celebration

The communications team is preparing a coordinated, comprehensive
campaign

to celebrate the Internet Society_s 20th anniversary in 2012. In
addition

to recognizing this significant milestone and advancing key Internet
Society

priorities, the celebration will focus world attention on the evolution
of

the Internet over the past 20 years and the opportunities and challenges

that will have a profound impact on its future. It will be comprised of

multiple initiatives that bring attention to topics critical to the

long-term health and viability of the Internet, highlight pioneers who
have

been key to the success of the Internet and the Internet Society, and

include an exciting global forum (more information available via

    <http://www.isoc.org/inet> http://www.isoc.org/inet)that will convene
participants from around the world.

The Global INET 2012 will be held in Geneva, 22-24 April 2012 and will
include

a two and one-half day programme, featuring thematic plenary discussions
by Internet,

technical, policy and development, and other thought leaders focused on
the

   future evolution of the Internet.

   + CEO Outreach

Lynn St. Amour was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the XXXI

Conference of the Brazilian Computing Society, 19 July 2011, in Brazil,

during the event_s 5th Women and Information Technology Workshop. Lynn's

participation was strongly requested by the Civil Society representatives
in

Brazil and was supported by our Regional Bureau Director, Sebastian

Bellagamba. Lynn_s speech coincided with the rejuvenation of the ISOC
Brazil

Chapter, and was a good opportunity to disseminate ISOC's mission and
goals,

as well as to invite members of the Brazilian Computing Society to join
ISOC

Global and the respective local chapter.

   + Internet Evolution 2011

Launched as a new publication at the OECD High-Level Meeting on the
Internet

Economy, it appeared to be very well received, with many delegates seen

holding copies, including the UK representative who waved it at his

co-attendees to emphasize his intervention. The hardcopy publication is

complemented by an online presence ( <http://isoc.org/evolution>
http://isoc.org/evolution ). At IETF 81,

the extremely well-attended ISOC at IETF Panel in Quebec City also addressed

   the Internet Evolution theme.
