The UN has issued a press release <http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs//2010/pi1936.doc.htm> announcing the reappointment of the Internet Governance Forum MAG. There are only 3 changes this year, as recommended by the outgoing MAG. The rationale for keeping the current membership in place was that this will be the final year of the original mandate of the IGF. It is possible a new mechanism for oversight may be decided by the UN in Q4 2010, and with the early date for IGF this year, there was not time to bring in a new group and get them up to speed to plan the Vilnius event. The new members are:
- Mr. Jorge Cancio Meliá, Madrid - Adviser-Deputy to the Director of Information Society Services, General Direction for the Development of the Information Society, Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade (representing the EU presidency)
- Mr. Alvaro Galvani, Brasilia - Head, Division of Information Society, Ministry of External Relations (replacing the previous Brazilian member, representing the Latin American governments)
- Mr Manuel B Dengo, Geneva – Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations Office at Geneva (replacing Miguel Alcaine of El Salvador, also representing the Latin American governments)
I remain a member of the MAG.
Bill
