Dear Members,
This is to inform you that the Internet Society now has an official
"Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council".
We had applied for this status in 2007 and our accreditation was approved
yesterday, in New York, by ECOSOC Member States.
This is an important step for ISOC as it gives the organization the
opportunity to become an even more important player on all the issues of
interest to us in the UN context, such as current discussions about the
future of the IGF and enhanced cooperation, and the many possible
discussions of Internet topics that may come up in the UN and its agencies
in future.
ECOSOC is the central forum for discussing international economic and social
issues and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States
and the United Nations system. ECOSOC is responsible for promoting higher
standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress;
identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems;
facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and
encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
NGOs that are formally recognized with consultative status are entitled to
accreditation which allows them to participate in relevant United Nations
conferences and preparatory meetings.

PS: A report will follow shortly on recent developments regarding the IGF
and enhanced cooperation processes which were both discussed by ECOSOC last
week as well as yesterday.
Best regards,
