The privacy issues laid out here is nothing new and has been a hot topic as
you saw discussed during SF INET. Part of this is FUD, Google uses Facebook
(a competition) and Yelp (a failed acquisition) to talk about out of control
situations for which they could provide a solution. I think we should be
careful with such endorsements as it may not align with "Internet is for
everyone".

Yes I think there is nothing but local federation out there and we have been
using the same open systems for a long time, largely due to time it takes to
adopt and scale managing such solutions. We seem to focus a lot on trust but
less on ways to verify e.g. I know that someone has authenticated several
systems to get to mine but how do I trust this?

Have we hit a wall in our current federation model? It is good to see that
this discussion has been revived in IETF.
