  PRESS RELEASE

Puerto Rico: midway on Internet readiness

                                                        December 16, 2010

(San Juan, Puerto Rico) Puerto Rico is midway in terms of technological development in comparison with the countries developed and the developing countries, concluded a study by the firm “Estudios Técnicos” (Technical Studies) and presented by the Chairman of its board, economist José J. Villamil, in an international symposium on the use of the Internet, organized by the local chapter of Internet Society.

"It seems that we have not been able to effectively communicate the importance of this sector, as well as its areas of opportunity for economic development", stated Villamil in the study.

The study also revealed that in terms of technological readiness, the incidence of Internet use by consumers in Puerto Rico is 38 per 100 people, “which is relatively good among developing countries, but very low compared to developed countries”, said Villamil.

“Developed countries have over 60 Internet users per 100 people”, added the economist.

The study was presented in the symposium: “The Power of the Cloud: The Internet as a Knowledge Resource for Economic Growth and Global Competitiveness”, held at the island’s Convention Center and with attendance of international guests, including representatives of the Internet Society of Geneva. The latest news related to the Internet and its impact on the global economic development, as well as Puerto Rico’s role in the digital revolution, were some of the topics presented during the event. Other issues included philosophical aspects and seminars aimed at business executives as well as the general public.

"We wanted to know how Puerto Rico was inserted in this new revolution of the digital and information era. Evidently we have a long road ahead to be able to fully compete with developed countries and to enter in the so-called 'Information Economy' phenomenon", said Archer Lebrón, Chairman of the Board of the Internet Society, Chapter of Puerto Rico (ISOCPR).

"The world has experienced an unprecedented revolution over the last decade, a true technological, economic, and social transformation. The personal and interpersonal communications, the socialization, the collaboration and the new economic models have switched all the aspects of our lives. In part, this change is the result of the fast growth of the Internet in last 10 years and we cannot remain behind", added Lebrón.

The president of ISOCPR, Eduardo Díaz, said that it is key for the private sector and the government to use the results of this study, in order for them to be prepared and foster Puerto Rico to be fully inserted in the digital revolution.

"The establishment of the Chapter of Puerto Rico responds to our need to have representation globally and to know the Internet rules throughout the world. Now it is our responsibility to be vigilant and promote that Puerto Rico moves swiftly in that way”, added Díaz.

Locally and internationally renowned personalities related to the Internet and the new information technologies were part of the event
