Yes it's the weekend again, a little cooler, and another ISOC-NY
newsletter, very cool!
We have a hot topic, a bunch of webcasts and some great upcoming events..
==Google/Verizon net neutrality proposal==
The break up of the FCC's 'secret talks" and the publishing of the
Google/Verizon joint legislative proposal has certainly stirred up a
net neutrality hornets nest. Just what "differentiated services" do
they have in mind? Is wireless realy out the window?
Read the full seven point proposal, our pick of the pundits, and the
official Internet Society position.

==Video: David Solomonoff – Taking Back the Edge: Freedom and the
Internet Model==
ISOC-NY's President gave a talk at the August 2010 monthly meeting of
the Manhattan Libertarian Party. David’s theme was ‘Taking Back the
Edge: Freedom and the Internet Model’. The meeting took place in the
back room of the Ukrainian East Village Restaurant (famous in
alternative music circles as the site of a legendary New Order show in
November 1981). David spoke about the importance of maintaining the
end-to-end principle and the open internet, threatened today by
repressive political forces and monopolistic interests. There was some
lively discussion with the libertarians about whether regulation was
preferable to unwelcome consolidation. David emphasized the bottom-up
standards making process that has stood the test of time.

Newby as he expounds on the benefits of the Allied Fiber open-access
model that could open up swaths of the hinterland to cheap high speed
internet.*

==Open Hardware Summit September 23 2010==
As an opening gambit to the NYC Maker Faire, and located right there
at the New York Hall of Science in Queens, the Open Hardware Summit
will be a venue to present, promote and discuss the ongoing open
source hardware movement. There is work to be done in nailing down the
definition of the term and producing a real, and enforceable license,
much like the Creative Commons License does for artistic creations and
the GPL does for software.

==Innovate/ Activate Unconference September 24-25 2010==
The Institute for Information Law & Policy at New York Law School is
proud to present Innovate / Activate, a two-day unconference,
cosponsored by the Information Society Project at Yale Law School,
where IP practitioners and activists will share their ideas and
experiences in order to transform the landscape of activism.
Many communities have formed around issues such as free speech vs
copyright; the importance of fair use; alternative licensing regimes
such as Creative Commons or free and open source software; patent
protection of software and business methods; and patents vs downstream
innovation of critical pharmaceuticals. It’s time to reexamine our
approaches to improving global welfare by identifying new and existing
IP-related challenges to activism, developing strategies for
overcoming IP obstacles, and delivering practical solutions to spur
social, political, environmental, scientific, technological and legal
change.
