I'd like to mention to Chapters a couple of new items on the ISOC-NY
Noticeboard
1) Video: Lessig on National Broadband Policy
http://www.isoc-ny.org/p2/?p=733
Lawrence Lessig, newly elected to the Internet Society’s Board of
Trustees, giving the keynote talk at Storage Network World 2010 in
Florida on Apr 12. Lessig's new theme, after copyright reform, is that
government (in the USA at least) is so beholden to incumbent corporate
lobbying that the public interest is no longer being served by the
process, and this is his first (to my knowledge), major run out of his
presentation of such. Whether one agrees or not, or feels he is
tilting at windmills, one will find included (starting around 8:50) a
very neat encapsulated history of the recent history of USA telecom
regulation - the background to our recent discussions about net
neutrality).
2) Video: National Broadband Plan Roundtable Discussion at NY Law School
http://www.isoc-ny.org/p2/?p=740 (Silverlight required)
Following a keynote from Blair Levin, Executive Director of the
National Broadband Plan at the FCC, a parade of distinguished experts
pontificate on the practicality of the USA's Broadband Plans. Nothing
earthshattering, but if you want to get a feel for the plan's
zeitgeist you can wallow all you want. As Levin notes, referring to
Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the framers attempted to take the
middle road. Note that yours truly gets the final question in at 3hrs
33mins.
3) Ofcom Report: Fiber capacity limitations in access networks
http://www.isoc-ny.org/p2/?p=742
This is one paper that every chapter should bring in and digest
thoroughly. It's an extremely comprehensive review of current fiber
technology and future options, well explained with diagrams,
including appendices of all relevant terms and acronyms. I cannot
recommend it too highly.
