Hi Gerard, others who were in charge and/or attended ITU Telecom World
2009:
1. I've heard that the event was a major flop. What does this really mean?
<Primarily that attendance was MUCH less than predicted. Registration was about 15% of the 40,000 advertised. But also the trade show failed to attract the global firms or customers, so the aisles were not exactly full.
Only lack of attendance? A failure of the ITU to deliver its message(s)?
The forum itself was reasonably good. ITU had a fair range of speakers, and frankly the ISOC speakers <Lynn, Karen) made good points and attracted good interaction. ISOC was not alone on panels in supporting the Internet. ITU on the other hand hosted a CTO summit which we were not informed of even as sector members. They also tried to have a Ministers-only discussion of the future of the Iinternet and to produce a statement from it. Fortunately, and by accident, the Canadian delegation found out about it and intervened to remind them that only Member States can produce declarations from the ITU, so that fell flat. They also hosted a meeting on financing ICT for D, but I have not had a report from that.
2. Does anyone have a (self- or third-party or any other) assessment of
how ISOC and the Internet fared altogether?
my personal assessment is that we did well. we were very prominently placed, and had good flow-by traffic. We met lots of interested people, at quite high levels, and had a lot of good side meetings. While traffic was not huge, the people we attracted were people we wanted to reach. <I cant say how the other organizations feel yet - we need to do a post-mortem.
What was not only the
cost-benefit but the risk-cost-benefit for ISOC?
my assessment is that both were positive. we needed to be in the forum, and the booth worked out well. Presumably we will be doing a review in the near future and will let you know. And if we do something like this again (not a given) we will be in contact earlier in the planning phase.
