First, thanks to those of you who joined us for last week's conference
call about the World Telecommunication Policy Forum. I apologize for
the technical glitch at my end when I lost power, but I do appreciate
your interest in our work to try to ensure that the delegates to this
important meeting are well informed, and hopefully will make decisions
that are good for the future of the Internet.
I also appreciate your interest in contributing to the development of
the various fact sheets that we're intending to submit to the ITU as
part of our informational program. I am attaching the first and
largest group of these here. These documents are to be used as part
of a long term process to take advantage of discussions of Internet
issues in international forums, taking advantage of the large
attendance by developing country governments. We are always
appreciative of comments to improve these documents, so are sharing
them with chapter delegates, org members and others in the technical
community to get their advice. Most of the documents attached here
have already been posted to our website in slightly older versions for
several months, and were promoted at previous ITU events.
Your help and comments to improve them will be much appreciated.
Because the ITU WTPF will be held in April, I'd appreciate having all
comments BEFORE MARCH 5, so we can get these distributed. Comments
received after that time will be kept on file for consideration in
developing future versions.
The documents attached here are:
1. Reaching out to your government.doc (Note hyperlinks throughout) --
this is a new document aiming to help ISOC members contact their
governments on WTPF issues.
2. IPv6 Allocation -- This document was produced to inform
governments and others about the process, and to inform them about
upcoming meetings
3. The Internet and Standards -- This document describes the
characteristics of an Internet standard and how they are developed.
It has also been used previously.
4. The User-Centric Internet -- This document has been a centrepiece
of ISOC's global outreach, and has been used several times, including
at last year's OECD Ministerial meeting on the information economy,
where it was submitted as a contribution with the support of a wide
range of Internet technical organizations. It raises a number of
important issues to be considered in the future development of the
Internet, consistent with ISOC's overall goals and principles.
One document is still to come, and should be ready for distribution in
the next few days. It talks about the Internet and how it is
different from the Next Generation Network as defined by the ITU,
based on a joint IETF-ITU workshop held in 2005 where the issue was
fully explored. It will be useful to remind WTPF participants about
the outcomes of that important event.
Regards,
Bill
