Hello All,
I wrote something in the Sphere OCS, parts of which is reproduced below.
What I said on the constitution of the Board was a little sharp for a
public list. What I tried to convey is NOT the idea that Civil Society is
superior. I have earlier stated somewhere else in a different context that
"mutli-stakeholderism" does not work when one of the stake holder groups
tries to assert that it is 'holier' than others.
At ISOC I have seen a considerable degree of mutual respect between those
who represent Government, those who are from CS, and those who are from
business. ISOC has organizational members and the chapter members and with
this combined constitution is effectively able to interact with Government .
This is what makes ISOC neutral. To reinforce this position of being above
divisions, it is necessary to bring about a balance, and it is with this
purpose that I raised the point related to the number of Chapter seats in
the Board.
Organizations came into the ISOC fold when it was observed that
organizations did not have a due representation. But the representation has
taken shape to be more than proportionate, so it is the Chapters' turn to
point out that the Chapters are not well represented within ISOC.
*There was a leadership game that I took part years ago at a Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards camp. The team leader divided us into small groups of
three, dropped pieces of three jigsaw puzzles - all three jumbled up - at
the center of the table and asked the group to assemble it. None of the
participants are to be irritated nor exhibit stress in the process. The
other rule was that none of the participants should "take" a required
component for his puzzle from another, but would look for and "give" what
others required In the end the group produced three solved puzzles.
In general, an individual is not anti-business, a business is not
anti-consumer and a Government is not anti-population. Problems arise only
when the concerns of one is not well understood by other. What if Civil
Society offers to help businesses expand with suggestions of opportunities
based on an internet-friendly, social enterprise model ? What if businesses
help the individuals with products and offerings that are easier and grow up
in the process like a Google or Skype? What if the business corporation and
the individual come together to help the government resolve its Security
concerns in a manner that the civil liberty values are not compromised ? *
*This can happen with greater respect among shareholders and it is
something that ISOC could easily achieve with the little imbalances set
right.
*Thank you
