Hello
ISOC India Chennai has a very simple task of coming up with a list of Online
Safety Tips for Children ( below 13 years and below 18 years ). In the
Indian context, a large proportion of these Internet users are new users so
it could be assumed that most of them require very basic tips on Online
Safety.
It is a simple task of drawing up a list of (1) What to do and what not to
do online for Children as also (2) providing tips to Parents and Teachers on
content filtering and even broadly monitoring the below 13's use of
Internet.
As part (2) of the exercise needs to be carefully approached, I am
requesting inputs from the Chapter Delegates to guide India Chennai with
information about work done by other chapters in this area, and also suggest
tips in your role as Parents, as Internet Technical experts or as Educators
or as Civil Society participants.
The Chapter would be publishing an article, possibly in one of India's
leading dailies and blogs - tomorrow, so a quick response is requested from
anyone who could find a bit of time.
Thank you

Subject: {ISOC India Chennai Chapter} Safer Internet Day
To: isocmadras at googlegroups.com
Hello
The twelfth of February was declared Safer Internet Day. The initiative
taken by the European Commission is meant to sensitise society concerning
the (un)safe use of ICT. However, the emphasis lies solely on communication
issues: safe chat, sexual abuse, cyberbullying, pornography on the Internet,
etc...
Syed Nazir Razik of our Chapter has taken the initiative on Child Safety
issues. His proposal, in broad terms, is that we form a working group on
Child Safety and bring in Children, parents, Teachers and other stakeholders
together to debate and work on Child Safety issues with respect to Internet
For a start, the chapter will be providing inputs to The Hindu on Child
Safety, in the form of Safety Tips for Children (addressed to parents and
children separately). The chapter would quickly write to other chapters to
ask what they are doing in this area, and ask for some inputs as also do a
little bit of collaborative work locally to determine what is relevant as
measures in the area of Online Safety for Children.
Inputs are required from Chapter members ( Security Experts, Parents,
Teachers among our members ) on this exercise of drawing up SIMPLE safety
tips ( for instance teach children to log off after browsing in an internet
cafe, do not post pictures in unsafe social networking sites, do not share
information about your physical location among strangers etc.. And for
parents of children below 13 years, advise on browser settings, content
filter settings etc )
These inputs are required by Tuesday Noon, sooner if possible.
Thank you
Sivasubramanian Muthusamy
