Dear Chapter delegates,

I wanted to notify you regarding the materials from our most recent
Board meeting held in Amsterdam on December 4th and 5th. The Business
Plan is now posted on our website: (http://www.isoc.org/isoc/general/trustees/docs/dec2009/business-plan.pdf
).

I encourage you to read the entire Business Plan. However, I would
like to highlight a few key areas of direction and development
discussed and presented during the Board meeting. You will find the
details of these presentations within the Board report.

Firstly, in 2010 ISOC’s support for Chapters is ‘going local’ and
there will be a strong focus on Chapter activity in the regions. The
Regional Bureaus as well as other programmatic and departmental staff
from within ISOC will seek a higher level of engagement and support
regarding Chapter projects and activities. Five key themes with
specific programmes will be driven throughout the year (see page 29 in
the Business Plan).

Secondly, due to the success the Internet Society has had with its
Bureaus we plan to expand this model further. This expansion will take
shape in a couple of ways; namely the alignment of ISOC staff toward
regional responsibility and focus, and, the opening of the European
and North American Bureaus. The European Bureau will be based in
Brussels and will be led by Frederic Donck who has recently provided
leadership in our Public Policy department. The North American Bureau
will seek a full-time leader in the future, however, until the
position is opened we have asked Sally Wentworth, Public Policy,
Reston office, to oversee our Bureau activities for the time being.
Our intent is to provide a greater level of support, communication and
collaboration regarding our Chapters, Organizational Members,
Individual Members, policy work, INETs and partners.

Thirdly, we have evolved the Department of Education into the
Department of Access and Regional Development. We believe that ISOC
has many opportunities to make a greater impact with regards to our
development projects by integrating more tightly our funding and
policy reach within the project area. The combination of enhanced
funding focus and policy development tied to the actual project will
create a more holistic approach and broader impact.

Fourthly, the Internet Society has made an important decision to
support W3C vis-a-vis a donation for the purpose of advancing the
evolution of W3C as an organization that creates open Web standards.
ISOC pledged to support W3C efforts to implement a more agile,
inclusive, and flexible organizational structure. Both organizations
share similar values regarding the internet's development. Both
organizations will continue to operate independently.

As always we will vigorously work together in order to ensure the
health of the Internet for everyone.

Sincerely,

Jon
