The trust is the charitable arm of Nominet, which registers .uk internet
domains. The company gave the trust £5m for grants to projects that it believes
make a positive difference to society through the internet.
The first
six projects have been allocated about £50,000 each, the trust announced
yesterday.
The successful organisations are the British Computer Association of the Blind, ChildNet International, the Internet Society, the Cambridge Global Grid for
Learning, Cambridgeshire
Library Learning Services and Youthnet.
The schemes include a
remote access support project that will allow visually impaired people access to
computers and the internet, run by BCAB.
Jonathan Welfare, chair of the
Nominet Trust, said: "These organisations have demonstrated with these six
projects that they will help and support our objectives.
"We are seeking
to fund more projects that will make a tangible and rapid difference in
developing the internet in the UK and other countries."
Applications should be through http://www.nominettrust.org.uk/
