One additional comment:
Despite the bloc of text complaining. All people trying it loved the concept and do like to see this service available on all IETF and other conferences.
So yes…that should be is a nice start project for the Real-Time Text Taskforce. Website: www.realtimetext.org

Hi Franck,
Yes I am familiar with the jabber construction. We actually did it at the IETF as well once to see what people thought of it.
The biggest complaint was that when Jabber is used it gave a big bloc of text suddenly and that increased the delay between what is said and what you see on the screen.
It is exactly there where Real-Time Text will be a valuable addition. The delay between the speaker and the text is then minimal. Since the text is then visible the moment the interpreter has typed them.
I am in contact with them and investigating how we can have this using real-time text.
As soon I have more details. I will let all of you know.
Cheers
Arnoud

APNIC and ICANN is offering that during its meetings. Not sure if IETF has that, I noticed a WG area director being blind...
I found it useful and very low bandwidth, however it has costs as a few transcribers are needed...

Hello Franck,
Yes that is a good idea and also add Real-Time Text captioning as well. Translating all the speech into text. It will help who cannot hear well, but also when the conference/meeting is held in a language that is not your own native language.
And when this works well, interpreters can offer translations via text as well.
This is just my 2 cents. But I consider that also quite realistic to make that possible.

All,
Following the discussion re PacINET video broadcasting and also the experience for local committees of setting up a performing wireless network, it occurred to me that could be an activity of ISOC in support to the chapters.
For instance, ISOC contracts a company to do the network at the IETF and ICANN does the same. They tend now to not rely on local providers to do the conference connectivity but only to supply the fat pipes. Indeed it is a special set of skills and tools to do this work correctly and it is only gained by experience in managing conferences.
At the moment Chapters are doing the following conferences: Afica INET, EGENI, PacINET,... (who did I miss?) There are also some day events run by chapters.
There are a few members and delegates that particpate remotely to this conference despite the technology issues. Personnaly, I thank all that did for PacINET (It gave quite an impression when Cook Islanders heard that there was a question from Ecuador).
It could be useful, to have a network in a box kind of tool, where you plug the Internet in one end, and place pre-configured Wireless acess points that would provide IPv4 AND IPv6 connectivity to a large set of laptops. It would have a conferencing system, to pick up sound and image and broadcast it via an ISOC relay server like marratech.
In some cases a technician could come with the box and set it all up before the meeting as well as manage it during meetings.
This would allow the whole of ISOC to be able to participate in other chapters needs, and ISOC could run like this a kind of virtual "TV" show for all its members and more. There are other things that could be broadcasted, like AC meetings, Chapters meeting, Board meetings,....
It is a rough idea, that needs to be made more real, but I sense that several needs could be fulfilled here.
What do you think?
