Dear Colleagues,

The following application for a Chapter in India – Kolkata has been 
received. It is being sent to this list for peer comment and review.

Please note that the chapter is not yet formed and has not officially
been recognised by ISOC.

If there are people on this list that know the individuals proposing to
establish the Chapter, feedback is especially welcome.

The period allowed for comments is 2 weeks and the deadline is 2nd
August 2008.

Chapter Application

A. Proposed name of the Chapter

The proposed name of the Chapter is "Internet Society India – Kolkata 
Chapter"

B. Community of Interest the Chapter will to serve

The chapter will serve the state of West Bengal in India.

C. Purpose and Scope of Chapter

The overall purpose of the Internet Society India - Kolkata Chapter will 
be to:
- Be an enabler in the region for increased growth of Internet through 
increased awareness about Internet and internet Society.
- Be part of worldwide Internet society (ISOC) and be a supporting 
factor in its activities.
  -Act as a liaison between Government & Organizations and be a 
collaborative medium for Internet related issues.

Further the goals of the chapter will primarily be divided into two 
distinct focus areas namely Urban & Rural and separate goals for each 
segment.

In Urban Area the Chapter will focus on to
a) Spread Proper Awareness about the internet capabilities, dos and 
don’ts and how internet can impact the bottom lines of the businesses.
b) Liaison with the local government on internet related issues.
c) Interacting with large business houses and ICT companies to fund the 
research activities.
d) Creating a forum wherein people from industry, academia, and users 
can interact to iron out the issues.

In Rural Area the chapter's mission and goal will be to:
a) Spread the Internet Awareness
b) Increase the Internet penetration
c) Work on cost effective model of Wireless connectivity

Then going forward this Chapter will act as a centralized force in this 
region for promoting the principles and goals of the ISOC both within 
our local community and around the world. This Chapter will bring the 
numerous knowledgeable Internet professionals in this region together 
and unite them in efforts to promote the evolution and understanding of 
the modern Internet. The Internet Society India-Kolkata Chapter will 
also act as an environment for social and professional networking in 
order to build a more cohesive culture for Internet professionals and 
activists in this region.

As ISOC has been facilitator and coordinator of Internet related 
initiatives around the world, a Chapter of ISOC in Kolkata is the best 
way to increase the efficacy and accessibility of Internet in the region.

He has offered his office to be regular meeting place and will be acting 
as Secretary for the Chapter.

F. List of Requirements

This is a Non profit organization and needs to be registered under 
Societies Act. There are no charges levied by the Government for 
registration but once registered an annual report along with financial 
statements needs to be submitted. This will help in opening a bank 
account for the chapter.

G. Additional Information

Introductory mail about the opening of Chapter was sent by ISOC, which 
has generated awareness about ISOC among the existing members. I was 
contacted by 8 (eight) of them from varied backgrounds who have shown 
interest in the chapter formation and taking an active part in the 
chapter activities. Further quite a few have registered based on my 
briefing about the purpose and scope of the Chapter. Till now, I have 
confirmation from 21 (Twenty One) and remaining Four members can join at 
any point of time.
