Unfortunately, we don't have the experience yet. However, I have a
similar project in the pipeline - to carry out a systematic comparative
test of various mobile Internet access provider to check to what extent
does the product delivered can be called "Internet access".
Apart from the obvious shortcomings of NAT (almost every provider I have
used gives me a RFC1918) there are issues with the messaging
(non-compliant email behaviour as per MIME for example) and finally - as
you mention - various forms of application level proxying.
For example, the Vodafone in Germany insists that pre-paid users go via
the proxy (so called "WAP proxy" although it has no longer anything to
do with WAP). but we haven't noticed any obvious issues with this.
My idea would be to come up with a common project among various chapters
to develop a reasonable test methodology to check standards-compliance
of the Internet offering of mobile providers. And the end-to-end
principle of RFC 1122 should be considered important one, I think.
I understand that you need something _now_, however.
