One element, that needs to be seriously considered - and this makes the use of 
flags not appropriate - is that the topic under discussion is languages, not 
countries.

If you would use the Swiss flag, this might refer to French, German, Italian, 
or Romantsch.

And if you use the German flag, this might refer to Austria, Germany, or 
Switzerland.

Flags do not refer to languages - I could also have used other examples from 
other parts of the world.
