Dear Colleagues,
At the last face to face Chapter & Member meeting held alongside the
ICANN meeting in Cairo in November, there was a discussion about how
to take maximum advantage of fact that there would be a large number
of Chapter delegates at the ICANN meeting in Mexico in order to
participate in the 2 day ICANN At Large Summit. It was suggested to
hold a one day Chapter and Member meeting in advance of the ALS Summit
on Friday February 27th which would be a pilot for a larger all
Chapters face to face meeting in the future. The intent of the
meeting is to provide more time for Chapters to meet, exchange ideas,
learn from each other and progress ideas.
TRAVEL BOOKINGS FOR ALS SUMMIT
Cheryl has made us aware that the ICANN ALS travel bookings window
opens on 2nd January and closes on the 23rd January 2009. Therefore,
if you are confirmed to attend the ALS Summit and are interested to
attend the Pilot one day ISOC Chapter Workshop, please email <chapter-support at isoc.org
>. ISOC will cover the additional expenses incurred (one nights
accommodation and meals) for those attending the summit. You will
need to amend your travel plans to arrive one day earlier.
This event is experimental. It will be a pilot which will provide us
with valuable feedback for planning for a larger all Chapter summit in
the future. Funding is limited. Not all Chapter delegates will be
able to attend. However, some additional funding will be made
available to sponsor the attendance of Chapter delegates from the LAC
region under the travel fellowship scheme (details of how to apply
will be available mid January 2009). Equally if you have funding to
attend the ICANN meeting and are confirmed to attend, but your
Chapter is not an ALS, you may also be eligible under the travel
fellowship scheme for some assistance with the extra costs incurred to
attend the workshop.
We will also investigate opportunities for remote participation.
WORKSHOP TOPICS - PLANNING
Whilst in Cairo, those interested to further discuss the idea of the
workshop met to brainstorm possible topics for the one day meeting.
The following suggestions for 2 parallel break out groups were proposed:
- Chapter capacity building strategies
- How to interact with government
- Funding: lessons shared and how to write grant proposals
- Accessibility
- Promoting IPv6
`
(Thanks to Olivier Crepin-Leblond, Khaled Khoubaa and Patrick Vande
Walle for the above suggestions).
We are looking to establish a small committee of volunteers who are
planning to attend ICANN Mexico to help with the planning and
execution of the meeting. In particular we are looking for people to
lead the discussions in the above areas. If you are interested, please
email <chapter-support at isoc.org>.
Best wishes for 2009,
Anne
