Dear all,

OneWebDay is now less than 30 days away. If you're holding a public
event, online or offline, now is the time to pull together the details
and get the word out.

Two key messages for this email (more than the usual 1):

First: Fill in the wiki with details so that everyone can see what
you're doing. <http://www.onewebday.org/base/index.php/Main_Page>
Write to us at questions at onewebday.org if you don't see your city on the
list.

Second: Please document whatever happens - take pictures and post them
to flickr.com, write blog posts, stream video.

We're using the tag #owd2008 - please mark blog posts and pictures with
that. For streaming video, ustream.com offers a good and free service.
To start a new show, click "My Shows". Type the name of your show into
the "Create New Show" box and click "Create". Once the information is
entered (don't forget to add the tag #owd2008), click "Broadcast Now" to
start broadcasting. A broadcast window will appear and request
permission to detect your webcam or camera. Select ALLOW. Now click
"Start Broadcasting" and you'll be live. Blip.tv or YouTube are great
places for hosted video.

We're trying to make sure we can see one another, and the best way to do
that is through these free services. We will pull material together and
feature it on the onewebday.org site.

ISOC-OWD points:

1. OneWebDay London's efforts have been joined by Tricia Drakes and
Olivier Crepin-Leblond of ISOC, as well as the indefatigable Catherine
White. It looks as if there will be a large public event in London. I
understand that this event will be used to re-launch ISOC London, but
Tricia and Olivier can let us know whether that is in fact the case.

2. I recall that Christopher Wilkinson was interested in getting out a
shared policy document in connection with OneWebDay on Sept. 22. Is that
still the case? If so, let me know so that we can help publicize it.

3. Is there any news about what is going on in Paris, if anything? It
would be too bad to have London and not Paris :-). I know that Daniel
Dardailler and Sebastien Bachollet were going to try to see if they
could create interest. I thought I would ask again.

4. ISOC Tunisia, Chennai, and Bangalore all have events - further
details would be very welcome indeed.

5. Other ISOC chapters are encouraged to join in. This is a natural
chapter-building opportunity.

Other updates:

1. The international Freedom not Fear people are creating terrific
videos for their Oct.11 event for which OWD is a planning day. Take a
look at onewebday.org or at the FNF wiki,
http://wiki.vorratsdatenspeicherung.de/Freedom_Not_Fear_2008.

2. In Los Angeles, Karen North is taking the lead with an event at the
Santa Monica Playhouse, featuring the head of digital strategy for one
of the main talent agencies.

3. In San Francisco, EFF is getting involved with the City of San
Francisco's efforts to use OWD as an occasion to provide wireless access
and tech centers in lower-income housing.

4. The Obama campaign has gotten interested in OWD. Let us know
*today* at questions at onewebday.org if you might be interested in having
an Obama speaker at a local event in the US. If an Obama person is
invited, we need to let the McCain campaign know. It is okay if the
McCain people and the Obama people appear at different events, or at
different times of the day at the same event, as long as OWD announces
at each event (segment) that the other candidate's people will be
appearing/have appeared - or have declined to appear. OWD is a
nonprofit and has to maintain neutrality. Again, we can help you with
this, and we want to stay coordinated, so keep in touch at
questions at onewebday.org.

5. Thanks to Michael Bracy for finding OWD a freelance PR person, Anne
Singer. Anne will be working with us on ensuring press coverage. You
may be hearing from her.

6. The DC Time Capsule is ready for your contributions - see
http://timecapsule.onewebday.org. This is a great project, led by a
whole team of groups and people in Washington DC, coordinated by Nathan
James. They are calling for best-of-the-e-democracy-web entries about
legislation and policy, heroes, tools, and letters to the future.
They're planning to "close" it on Sept. 22, although it will be a
continuing resource, and then look back in 2020. To keep track of this
effort, join the Facebook group:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58085250439 This is *not* limited
to DC - supposed to be international.

7. Bill Callahan in Cleveland has great ideas for web streaming a
program to Cleveland city schoolkids, and then having a public
discussion. More coming later this week. Cincinnati also will have a
OWD event of some kind. Thanks to Angela Siefer for making this happen.

8. Britt Blaser, Matt Cooperrider, and Renee Lloyd of the Berkman
Center (Harvard) are working on an online response-to-government project
involving Governer Deval Patrick's videos - making it easy for anyone on
9/22 to upload a response to the Governor. This looks exciting - many
thanks to all.

9. Tim Berners-Lee will be doing a video appearance at some OneWebDay
event - we're still working on which one.

I'll write again soon.

Susan
