Dear Colleagues,

Firstly apologies that it has taken me a few days to reply to this
thread and thanks for your many postings and feedback in response to
the announcement. It is great to hear from so many people!

In response to some concerns, I should clarify that existing chapter
domains can co-exist with any sub-domains delegated and that this
service is being offered in response to requests from a number of
chapters to provide such a service.

A related point often mentioned by members and chapters is regarding
additional efforts that ISOC might undertake with respect to
increasing global recognition for ISOC as a whole. This pilot will
help in that respect. As consistency is a strong driver towards
global recognition and aids our professional image, this and other
policies will be revisited in the future, along with other tools of
branding like the use of the ISOC logo. ISOC members and chapters
would of course be fully involved with any reviews of policy.

I hear the comments and the preference for sub-domains within the
isoc.org domain. The rationale behind the proposal to put all
Chapter addresses in the format [chaptername].chapters.isoc.org was
as follows:

- it would allow for a clean segmentation of Chapter DNS info from
ISOC's operational DNS info. Subdomains of isoc.org are already used
for areas other than web addresses - for example, the isoc.org zone
file already has geneva.isoc.org and gva.isoc.org in use for
operations of the ISOC office in Geneva and this is nothing to do
with the ISOC Geneva chapter.

- a clean separation leaves the door open for *any* name whatsoever
within chapter(s).isoc.org with no risk of conflict with existing DNS
entries.

- Separating out the entries also allows for separate management at
some point in the future. This would be harder if the zone files were
intermingled.

I'd like to continue this discussion in light of comments to-date
and this fuller exposé of the rationale and to hold off on the idea
of a committee just now to see what the overall preference for the
sub-domain from folk is. If we go with isoc.org we will need to
define a clear policy for the namespace and then a smaller group of
volunteers to assist in defining a policy would be very helpful.

Best wishes,

Anne
