Typical dishes:

Arroz con habichuelas – Rice and beans; beans come in diferente
colors
(blancas/white, rosadas/pink, colorás/red) – usually accompanied by
meat

Bistec encebollado – Minute steak sautéed with onions

Pernil asado – Roasted pork; usually eaten with arroz con gandules
(rice
cooked with small, tasty beans)

Pastelón de Amarillos – Ripe plantains and either beef of chicken
pie.
Great combination of sweet and salty tastes.

Chicharrones de Pollo o Credo – Fried chicken or pork nuggets –
nothing like
KFC’s version – much, much better!

Mofongo relleno de
 - Mashed plantains filled with shrimp creole,
fried pork
or chicken.

** make sure you taste the following side orders:  tostones (fried
green
plantains), amarillos (fried ripe plantains – naturally sweet) and
platanutres/mariquitas (another style of fried green plantains)

For dessert, try flan (egg custard), which is paired with many
fruits/flavors such as guava, cheese, coconut.  Other typical
desserts are:
casquitos de guayaba or pasta de guayaba con queso (guava shells or
guava
paste with cheese) and dulce de lechoza (papaya shells; usually
served with
cheese).
