[Chapter-delegates] ooXML

I am very, very glad to see so much interest in the Open Document Format
and Microsoft's attempt to get OOXML made a standard. I'm particularly
glad to see the statement from the ISOC Luxemburg chapter. IBM, Oracle,
and a number of other companies feel that the proposed OOXML standard, as
presently drafted, should NEVER be approved. Fortunately, many national
standards bodies seem to agree. But ISOC chapters can help educate those
national standards bodies that have not yet voted. (The deadline for
voting is September 2.)
As Alejandro said, this is very, very much an Internet issue; it's not just
about word-processing software. As more and more services and software
migrate "into the cloud" and Web Services and SOA allow us to more easily
share and combine documents and pieces of code (to create mash-ups, etc.)
it's going to be essential that we have an open standard for documents.
ODF is the answer; OOXML is not. If you've looked at the OOXML standard,
you know it's more than 4000 pages long!!! And even then, it's not
complete or implementable. Microsoft is the only company that will ever
implement it.

Javier,
further in this exchange, it need be noted that the Microsoft-XML standard
is not only an "Office" issue, but actually very much an Internet issue.
The way Microsoft is using it affects not only offline but also online
behaviour of its software. Sites that we have prepared to be compatible
with almost everything are now not working with the latest versions of
Explorer because of this.
So while there may be some debate about the sufficiency of ODF for all
possible purposes, and some folks hesitate to push it forward real hard,
there seems to be no doubt that ooXML will poison the Internet experience.
Do others have more-detailed information here?
Yours,
Alejandro Pisanty
