Dear Chapter Delegates:
Here below is a note I just sent to all members - can you be sure to
give it wide dissemination in your chapter.
Many thanks
David
Dear Members of the Internet Society:
You have recently seen mail from me requesting your
input/suggestions/comments regarding budget formation by ISOC for the
period from 2007 to 2009. That request is still open and I will look for
your feedback.
However, I am now back with another - SEPARATE - request - similar in
some respects but distinctly different in important respects and
distinctly important in the evolution and progression of ISOC itself.
ISOC wishes to discuss and adopt the next large and galvanizing
strategic initiative to be pursued to make a major, lasting, and
important contribution to the evolution of the Internet for the benefit
of all people everywhere. This is a goal that will by its very nature
last well beyond 2009.
We have, as an organization, made a great impact on the evolution of the
Internet since we were formed in 1992 - and we have done this together
as one: ISOC, its chapters and members. Like any organization armed with
resources and energetic and creative members we want to ensure that we
continue to grow our impact as the Internet itself grows and becomes a
mainstream element in most of the world's economies and communications
infrastructures.
So we plan to discuss a short-list of suggestions at the Board meeting
in November of this year with a view to further development and
consideration of appropriate ideas that will allow us, by the Board
meeting in March of 2007, to adopt one, or at most two, very large,
audacious and uniquely appropriate for ISOC initiatives to pursue over
the next five to ten years.
You can easily see how important this is and so I am asking for your
input here as well. Below I have suggested criteria but they are meant
as an aid, not as a limitation on your imagination. I also include below
a template to follow in suggesting ideas. IDEAS MUST USE THIS TEMPLATE
IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED!
So as to receive ideas and to be able to present them to the Board in
some logical fashion, I am asking you to reply to this request not later
than Monday, October 23rd.
Please use this separate mail address to reply to this request:
ideas2007 at isoc.org
This then is your chance to lend your thinking to our future. It is
important. For your consideration on this our entire community is
grateful. Please see the suggested criteria and template below.
TEMPLATE (MANDATORY) TO FOLLOW IN RESPLYING TO THIS REQUEST:
1. Working Title:
2. Abstract:
3. Description:
4. Involvement of ISOC community; benefit for ISOC community:
5. External Partners:
6. Measurable goals:
(e.g.): 2008:
2010:
2012:
7. Risks:
8. Why ISOC and not someone else?
SUGGESTED CRITERIA
a. Have a measurable, deliverable impact, consistent with ISOC's mission
of promoting the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet
for the benefit of all people throughout the world."
b. Leverage and build on the ISOC brand and increase ISOC's recognition
in the Internet and public spheres.
c. Provide strong opportunities for ISOC's membership and chapters, as
well as ISOC stakeholders to engage in and contribute to the success of
the initiative.
d. Position ISOC in a broad thought-leadership role.
e. Provide opportunities for collaboration with entities outside ISOC's
traditional community that would complement ISOC's core competencies and
contribute significantly towards achieving project goals.
f. Present a sound case for ISOC's financial investment as well as the
investment of potential partners.
g. Minimize duplication of the work of other entities or existing
projects/programs and not compete with commercial products or services.
Thank you and best regards,
David McAuley
