I have been with the Internet Society for just over a year and a half
and have worked closely with Jim in that time.

It has been a true honor to work with such a selfless volunteer - Jim
has been serving in this capacity as an unpaid volunteer. In this role,
Jim gave more than generously of his time and attention. His every
endeavor for ISOC was characterized by enthusiasm, common sense,
wonderful insight, and unwavering caring for both ISOC and its chapters
and members.

It is very reassuring to see that Jim will remain active in ISOC. He has
my thanks and my best wishes for all his considerable work.

David

Subject: [Chapter-delegates] reflections on a change in status

Almost 4 years ago I accepted the position of the Vice President of
Chapters and Individual Members at ISOC. The position was intended to
be a three year appointment. During this time much has changed about
the Chapter and Membership program at ISOC. It has been both exciting
and challenging to work with folks from all over the world.

The free membership had just been decided when I started. One of the
first tasks was to define the program. Along the way we developed a
Code of Conduct for ISOC Members.

We now have more active Chapters than ISOC has ever had in its history.
Of course, much of that success belongs to the Chapters, the folks who
keep their Chapters active.

We have a new membership system, along with revised policies and
procedures to support it. It is not everything that everyone would like
it to be, but it is a great deal more than ISOC has ever had.

We have better communication now with our Chapters and Members than we
have ever had. I started a newsletter and Chapters have kept it
relevant by providing the news each month. The chapter-delegates
mailing list has become a cornerstone of keeping Chapters informed.

Certainly the work is not done. The next major task is to revise the
web site. Those plans are just getting started and you should
expect to hear more about them as they progress.

ISOC's resources, both financially and in terms of staff, have increased
during this time. The foundation and infrastructure is now there for
all of us to work together to continue to enhance the partnership
between ISOC and its Chapters, and the contributions of individual
members to the mission and purpose of ISOC.

My leadership role is ending. With its increased resources ISOC does
not need a successor for my role at this time. I am returning to the
rank and file of the organization: an individual member without a
Chapter (although I do live within 90 minutes of the Washington DC
Chapter). Perhaps now I will have the time to change that.

With this message I am relinquishing my role and responsibilities as
Vice President of Chapters and Individual Membership. It has been my
greatest pleasure and unequaled honor to know and to work with each of
you. I am not going far, since on the Internet we are all "just a click
away". Please feel free to contact me at any time, even if just to say
hello.

Thank you,

Jim Galvin
Vice President of Chapters and Individual Membership, retired
