Veni, Ramon,
I am going to say a few things in response to your emails
(below). I do not ask for responses to this email; I think
it is best if there are no replies, unless you wish to reject
what I say.
Veni, Ramon, others, thank you for the messages below, but you
do not need to thank me.
I received my thanks when so many chapters sent in emails, video
clips, photos, pouring out their feelings in such heartfelt ways
to express their thanks to Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn.
I will receive my reward when:
(a) Chapters have mounted substantial cooperative projects
of benefit to chapters and members.
(b) Chapters have learned to cooperate with and place trust
in ISOC Hq.
(c) ISOC Hq. has learned to cooperate with and place trust in
chapters.
(d) The ISOC Board of Trustees has learned not to turn their
backs on membership and chapters, has learned that they
are seen as doing so, and understands that ISOC
membership and chapters will be aggressive in driving
(or driving out) the Board of Trustees until this
change is made. The IETF is vital. Of course. Chapters
and worldwide active members are also vital.
(e) We all have achieved a full degree of openness and
transparency that must be present for ISOC to do its job,
I see progress in that direction; there needs to be more.
We -- every one of us -- needs to do a better job of actively
supporting ISOC.
I believe ISOC is needed.
ISOC, and the brilliant concepts underlying ISOC are of supreme
importance to the world, and I hope will continue to be that
important for some time into the future.
I will continue kicking and yelling and doing what constructive
work I can (such as the Appreciation Evening for Vint and Bob)
until I see that ISOC chapters are building strong momentum.
ISOC has an enormous role to play. Given the continuing blinding
rate of development, growth, reach of the Internet, in relative
terms ISOC is falling behind. If we (ISOC) do not learn to move
ahead with sufficient speed to take some leadership, then we are
losing ground every day. Given the general financial
difficulties of the last five years, perhaps it is
understandable, but it is time to get going again.
I apologize for such confrontational statements.
Why am I so vocal at this moment?
Because I have read and thought about the "Announcing ISOC"
written by Vint Cerf, Bob Kahn and Lyman Chapin dated 1992.
I strongly recommend you read that document, particularly
if you do not remember its words well. It is posted on the
DCISOC chapter web site: www.dcisoc.org/Announcing_ISOC.pdf
Thank you Lynn St. Amour, for digging out this document and
sending it to us to have available at the Appreciation Evening
for Vint and Bob. It is a remarkable document. If I had read
it in early 1992, I would have attempted to sign up for ISOC
the next day.
