David,
I very welcome this idea and initiative. It's easy to maintain from the HQ
because you oversee most of the activities worldwide, and it would be easy
to connect with on of the longtime ago propposals of Gene Gaines.
To have the possibility to visit local chapters when you travel to other
countries. For instance I'll go to NY for 5 days next week to interview
internet pioneers
but it's my first time there. I dont know anybody there, so one good
starting point would be to meet with someone of the local chapter.
To promote this kind of informal meetings (publishing the figure of a
"foreign affairs officer" in each chapter that like the idea) is quite easy
and will strength inter-chapter relationship. Thanks for the information you
provided below.

Asunto: [chapter-delegates] Chapters & Members Meetings/Chats 'Program'
Dear Chapter Delegates,
As part of an initiative to enhance communications and collaboration between
ISOC, ISOC Chapters, and members, we are proposing to have regular physical
meetings/chats. Specifically, several times during the year there are
regional meetings and conferences at which one or more ISOC Trustees and
staff are present. We would like to encourage and further promote these
opportunities to have a chat between all those ISOC members who are present
at the event.
We are looking to collaborate, facilitate, and support these meetings in any
way we can. We see these meetings falling into two different categories.
Sometimes, we will want a more formal meeting, with planned agendas. These
would have well-defined topics for discussion, speakers, and plenty of time
for discussion. Other times the meetings will be more informal, with ISOC
Trustees and staff present but with perhaps a Chapter or Member managing the
meeting and agenda.
Several of you are already doing this and your efforts are appreciated by
many. We are particularly supportive of the "virtual meetings" proposed and
organized by Andreu Veà, and we hope this takes hold on a wider (possibly
regional level). We want to thank everyone for their support and
acknowledge the contribution efforts like this make to ISOC and our mission.
The meetings we are proposing are an extension of several informal programs
we have had in the past and reflect the fact that we are making headway on
building up our support infrastructure to chapters and members.
We will be asking Trustees for their help in identifying opportunities where
they will be present to meet and participate in these meetings. Many of them
already do this on a regular basis.
We are also asking for your help in identifying opportunities when we can
arrange these meetings.
Here are the upcoming opportunities we know about:
- ICANN meeting in Mar del Plata, Argentina - April 4, 2005
Lynn St.Amour and several ISOC Trustees will be present and we will be
arranging a meeting at the ICANN venue.
- AfNOG meeting in Maputo, Mozambique - April 17, 2005
- SEINIT seminar in Paris, France - April 27-28, 2005
- INET MEA regional conference in Cairo, Egypt - May 8, 2005
- ICANN meeting in Luxembourg - July 11, 2005
- IETF meeting in Paris, France - July 31, 2005
Please let us know if you know of others.
We will be following up with you as we begin to coordinate and organize
these meetings/chats. Your comments and suggestions are very welcome.
Thank you all and best regards,
David
