Dear President,

That resolution 03-08 sounds much better than what is in currently in
effect.

I don't think anyone in Indonesia will react negatively to see a new
membership level named "Professional Members" with US$75 price tag.

We don't care about the fee. In Indonesia we learn in very early age that
every good things need money, and lots of it. When I first joined ISOC
several years ago, I paid using credit card, which at that time still
accepted in U.S. I also paid IEEE membership within the same year, no
problem with that either.

However, this time is a little different because:

1. For the last couple of years, membership has been offered for free. Since
last year, we have been recruiting members under the context of "NO FEE".
Charging for it now makes ISOC looks like one of the many online games that
usually offer initial membership for free, and then charge people after they
have been using the system for several months. In the case of online games
however, the benefits of membership is quite visible and clear.

2. When I joined, I paid US$ 15, now it is US$ 75, a real huge inflation
rate I guess. But that's not the primary problem. The primary problem is: I
can't pay even if I want to since I can no longer use my credit card to buy
anything from any U.S. and European sites. This means that those who own
only Indonesian Banks' credit card can pay either, guess that cross almost
everyone in my country out.

3. All of this merely for the sake of "voting" benefits. I'll tell you that
we already have more than enough votings in our country ( 3 in the last
general election ). None of the currently active members of Indonesian
Chapter belongst to large corporation who could have interest in buying
voting power in ISOC. We are mostly hard working professionals who took some
of our valuable work (not spare!) time to disseminate standards and bridge
the technology gap for the people in our country, with the hope that someday
we can develop new tecnologies and standards too. If we get to vote, that's
good, if we don't, that's fine too.

So, again, to re-instate our concern:

Just change the associate status back to member, and use "Professional
Member" for the voting class, as suggested in resolution 03-08 and
Indonesian members will be sitting nicely in the back row with smiles on our
faces.

Regards,

Irwan Effendi
Secretary - Indonesian Chapter
